A ship carrying families of settlers seeking religious freedom. Before landing, they signed an agreement on board to govern themselves.
On 16 September 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, with 102 passengers, about a third of them Puritan Separatists. It was headed for Virginia but, blown off course by storms, reached Cape Cod in November before moving on to Plymouth, Massachusetts. On board, the passengers signed the Mayflower Compact, an agreement to govern themselves.
