Venus of Willendorf
Austria · c. 25,000 BCE
A small female figure with generous curves, carved from a soft stone. Among the very first images of the human body, its meaning is still debated.
Around 25,000 BCE, a figurine of a woman 11 cm tall was carved from a limestone that does not come from the region. It was discovered in 1908 at Willendorf, on the banks of the Danube, and is kept in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Its meaning is still debated: fertility, idol or self-portrait.
