Toba supereruption
Indonesia · c. 74,000 BCE
A volcanic explosion of colossal power that hurls huge amounts of ash into the atmosphere and cools the planet's climate for years.
Around 74,000 BCE, the Toba volcano, on Sumatra, explodes and ejects about 2,800 km³ of material. It may have plunged the planet into a volcanic winter lasting several years and, according to some hypotheses, sharply reduced the number of humans. Its giant crater now forms Lake Toba.
