A white marble tomb commissioned by a grief-stricken ruler for his late wife. Dome, minarets and pool reflect a perfect symmetry.
Built between 1632 and 1653 in Agra, India, by Shah Jahan for Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631, the Taj Mahal employs 20,000 workers and combines Persian, Indian and Islamic traditions. Listed by UNESCO in 1983, it is one of the most visited monuments in the world.
