The migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions from Mecca to Medina.

Hijra of Muhammad
Saudi Arabia · 622
The forced departure of a persecuted prophet and his followers to a city that welcomes them. It marks the starting point of the calendar of a major religion.
In 622, Muhammad and his followers, persecuted in Mecca, leave for Yathrib, renamed Medina. This departure, called the Hijra or "emigration", marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It also sees the birth of the first politically organised Muslim community.
