Haitian independence
Haiti · 1804
A victorious slave revolt that leads to the creation of a free state led by those who had been enslaved. It proves that abolition can come from those who demand it.
On 1 January 1804, in Gonaïves, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaims the independence of Saint-Domingue, which takes the name Haiti, "mountainous land" in Taíno. It is the culmination of the revolt that began in 1791. For the first time, enslaved people abolish slavery themselves through their victory.
