Conquests of Alexander the Great
North Macedonia · 334 → 323 BCE
A series of campaigns led by a young king who overthrows a vast rival state and pushes his army ever farther from home. His sudden death shatters what he built.
In 334 BCE, Alexander of Macedon, a former pupil of Aristotle, set out to conquer the Achaemenid Empire. In ten years, he defeated Darius III, founded Alexandria in Egypt and reached the Indus. He died in Babylon in 323 BCE, aged 32, and his empire quickly broke apart, but Greek culture spread as far as Central Asia.
