In 551 BCE, Confucius, or Kongzi, was born in Qufu, in the state of Lu, in China. He taught the ethics of human relationships, the respect owed to parents and the importance of rites. Collected by his disciples, his conversations became a foundation of thought in China, Korea and Japan.
