Ancient Olympic Games
Greece · 776 BCE → 393 CE
Great athletic competitions in which the best athletes compete in running, wrestling or chariot racing, for a mere wreath of leaves. A truce accompanies them.
From 776 BCE to 393 CE, the Greek city-states gather every four years at Olympia for running, wrestling, pentathlon and chariot events. The winner receives only a crown of wild olive. Emperor Theodosius I eventually bans these games as a pagan rite.
